Breaking Bread

Slammed Blizzard shut. Stood still as I looked ahead. Deep breath as I savored the feel of warmth and the slight break of sweat.

Began walking towards the door. Loving the feel of naked feet and flip flops.

Then, I heard a young voice yelling, "Miss Watkoski, Miss Watkoski..."

I knew who it was. A very special student at my school who comes and hangs out with me. I'm blessed that we 'clicked.'

I stopped after a year of trying to get her/him to learn my name.

The students whispers in my ear: "Don't let anyone know at school."

Me: "I gotcha your back. Now, come on. Wash your hands you can help me help others."

And, that began my evening of serving dinner with another teacher at the homeless shelter.

After getting everyone served. I took a plate to sit down with everyone. The student picked up her plate and came and sat by me. I let the student eat off my plate. One bit of our conversation touched on how this meal was much better than the Fish Treasures at school.

Moral of the Story: One word: humbling.

My pastor has been doing a sermon series on how 'Christians Get It Wrong.' Here's his sermon regarding the poor. http://www.culpeperumc.org/documents/SermonNotes2-6-11.pdf

  1. You are a blessing to so many. Your students, especially this particular one, are lucky.

PS - we have "trout treasures" at C's school. I can't hardly say the name without bursting out laughing while C snarls in disgust.
