The Drop It! 2011 Healthy Living Challenge kicked off today in Culpeper.
In a nutshell, it's a program that provides free health classes, free fitness classes at local gyms, and involves the whole community from the school system to the local community college to the American Cancer Society.
For every pound that is lost between now and May, $50/lb will be donated to the nursing program at the local community college. In addition, $10/lb will be donated to a charity of your choice. Young Life is on the list! So, basically, if I lose 5 lbs between now and May, then $600 will be donated to great causes.
Sounds like a win-win to me! Or, a win-lose (get it...eh?)!
At the fair today were tons of freebies and fitness classes. The American Cancer Society had a booth that offered information on Relay For Life and provided a DermaScan. I did the DermaScan about 5 times to check out whether I had and how much sun damage I had on my face. I was pleasantly surprised after the years of lifeguarding. It was great to see so many Relayers out, catch up, and to hand out great information about the American Cancer Society.
Moral of the Story: There's nothing better than seeing a community piece a puzzle together for a greater cause whether it be healthy living, fighting cancer, or providing for the needy.
