I truly love my class this year. Every personality, every instructional level, every height, every skin tone, every haircut...I do love them.
Today's happenings:
- Girl walks in with 'ancient' field hockey stick her mom got at an auction. 4th day in a row she's brought it to school. It rests in the back next to the pencil sharpener and it never bothers anyone. Isn't that magic in a classroom with 22 3rd graders? I love it. I did hear a mentioning of a boy wanting to play hockey with it during indoor recess. All I had to do was give the 'eye.' It never played hockey.
- Assessment testing...Reading...the smiles, smirks, eyes lighting up once they see their score...improvement increases a child's pride like no other...it totally negates the 1.5 hours of silence in our room.
- Me giving the kids a surprise 5 min recess as we walked in from the Art trailer...you would have thought I'd given each of them $100. One child yelled, "I'm freeeeeee!" as he ran away from me. A girl did give me a fake $100 bill on our way inside.
- We have started extended day at our school where students stay for an extra 1.5 hours for SOL prep. I overhead my Smart Cookies discussing how much they loved staying after and that it was so much fun learning. I'm about had a heartattack...
- I had Subway for lunch. Opening my lunch box was like opening a Christmas gift.
- I hopped in a 2nd grade classroom. I challenged them to solve a third grade problem. Some did. I'm scouting. Just kidding.
Moral of the Story: "A good teacher is like a candle--it consumes itself to light the way for others." Man, does this quote describe my week. Today, was a day that little moments affirmed that it's all worth it. Happy Little Friday!
