Undefeated

We came in to tonight's final game...not having lost.

Before we knew it, we were down by 3 goals.

And, then resiliency, strategic play, and sheer grit over came the team.

6 unanswered goals later we were back on top.

We have refused to utter the 'undefeated' word for the past few weeks.

I'm a firm child and believer of superstitions.

We pulled into half time up by 3 goals after a clutch 100 yard goal pass play with 4.5 seconds to go into the half. We listened and executed the play.

We made our adjustments. Players listened and then implemented. And, we followed through. Most importantly, a young team of almost new players pulled out our high school's first undefeated season ever. It's only 4 years old. But, still there was pressure although we'd like to act like there wasn't.

The girls begged for it to be 'plop' time. I had told them all season that they could do it in the last game only if we were really winning. With 2 minutes to go, I called a timeout just so everyone could fix their hair. The stands broke out in laughter as we pulled away and won 16-9.

As soon as the whistle blew, a beautiful thing happened. The girls didn't gloat or break into little cliques. The unselfish team sprinted for the goalie and tackled her.

There was a mound of 20 high school girls experiencing something very few can savor.

The taste of being undefeated as a team. But, behind that they each know all the ingredients it took to make it happen. And, that's the life lesson.

Moral of the Story: The true satisfaction came from winning as a team, being undefeated was icing on the cake.
