The Night Before the Snow

'Snowed In' at my school has taken on a life of it's own.

I do not think our Relay For Life team had any clue that it would be such a hit--and fundraising success!

A simple idea has had major rippling effects throughout the school community.

The idea-buy a snowball for $1...have it thrown at a teacher's classroom. The classroom with the most snowballs is 'snowed in' next Friday complete with pajamas and comfort food.

Since there's no snow, we'll make our own.

Who knew that paper snowballs would raise over $2,000 in a week?! $2,000 headed to the American Cancer Society.

But, what's been even better...and cooler...and funner...and heartwarming is watching a class of 22 Smart Cookies practice persuasive speeches, ask adults for something (quite the reversal of the norm), join together for a common good, strategize, create advertising (there's a huge snowman with a purple nose and cancer ribbon buttons and a sign saying 'Donations Excepted' ourside our room), live the ups-and-downs of a friendly competition, recognize the heartwrenching truth of cancer, enjoy Youtube videos, and   discover how to put the 'fun' in fundraising (can you say solo cups at Super Bowl parties?).

We have had so much fun.

Plus, we just started learning about money. I have never loved counting change soooo much!

It has been a real life experience of economics, diversity, math operations, math money, persuasive writing, artistic expression, and public speaking.

Throughout the week, we vascilated between first and second.

At the end of today, one class has $285 worth of snowballs. While the Smart Cookies has $245 worth of snowballs. Third place is distantly behind.

But, it's has been a lovely time watching and hearing the actions of students as they think outside the box for something bigger than themselves.

Moral of the Story: Here's to hoping for a Blizzard!
