Why are you single?

A lady came running up to me at Relay, "Are you single?"

Why are you single? Aren't you lonely? Don't you want a boyfriend?

These are the questions I'm asked frequently.

Why does society think I want a boyfriend? Why does society think I need a boyfriend?

Since I have graduated college, many believe 'it's time' to focus on my love life. Sure, there is a generational bias that I should be 'married off' by now. Grams has gone even as far as to suggest I marry a high schooler with a criminal record.

Logan sent Ellen and I an interesting article about emotional pornography. Media has set expectations regarding love. From kids being inundated with the Cinderella story where Prince Charming saves the day to Jerry Maguire's famous line of "You complete me."

While I admit Ever After is one of my favorite movies, I will say that I haven't seen Jerry Maguire all the way (but a 2nd grader at my school looks just like the little boy).

Absolutely, there is a yearning for a male best friend to share my life with. But, the expectation of a soulmate or Prince Charming is a skewed expectation. Love is life. Life is journey. So, love is a journey, not a yellow-brick road.

I embrace being single. Rather, than saying "You complete me." I want to say "I complete me."

Moral of the Story: I'm at the point in my journey of life for a reason. My God-given job is to acknowledge it, soak it up, and learn for the future as I develop myself.
